Si è spento all’età di 95 anni Benedetto XVI, 265mo Papa della Chiesa cattolica dal 19 aprile 2005 al 28 febbraio 2013. Le sue condizioni si erano aggravate con l’avanzare dell’età. Papa Francesco aveva invitato a pregare per lui e si era recato al monastero Mater Ecclesiae, dove Ratzinger viveva dal 2013, per salutarlo. Protagonista della vita della Chiesa e della cultura europea, teologo, professore, arcivescovo di Monaco, prefetto della Dottrina della fede, papa e papa-emerito, Joseph Ratzinger, nono successore tedesco di Pietro, figlio di un poliziotto e di una cuoca, nacque a Marktl am Inn, il 16 aprile 1927. Era la vigilia di Pasqua. Ratzinger fu battezzato – ricorda padre Federico Lombardi – al mattino dello stesso giorno con la ‘nuova’ acqua, appena benedetta”, segno per lui di una “particolare incorporazione al mistero pasquale”.
La cronaca e la storia recente ricordano soprattutto la sua rinuncia al pontificato, un atto di coraggio che ha profondamente innovato il ministero papale. Ratzinger è stato l’ottavo pontefice a rinunciare al ministero petrino, se si considerano i casi di Clemente I, Ponziano, Silverio, Benedetto IX, Gregorio VI, Celestino V e Gregorio XII, di cui si hanno fonti storiche certe o molto attendibili. È stato anche il più longevo dei papi della Chiesa.
